“Fetch me my coat young lad.”

He nodded without hesitation, or rather, without even thinking and hurried toward the place he had placed the visitor’s old garment on their silly clothes-rack. The coat seemed so used and antique he questioned himself as to why this person wanted to keep on wearing that thing. Seriously, with that rank he could obviously buy enough coats to keep himself warm for his remaining life instead. But no. Mister Royal Counselor preferred going around Castle Town showing people his reminder of what used to be a coat.
He would have asked him himself if he preferred on selling it, but doing so would make him seem rude (even if he was) and would get him and his Father in trouble with their superiors. His Father could even go back to working as a butler if he either uttered one word that was out of their place. Or (in his case) out of his role as the “coat-fetcher”. They were definitely not going back to earning naught but 10 measly rupees a day. So... being a “coat-fetcher” wasn’t as bad as being the shoe polisher from Chuggly’s snobby shop at Central Square. This would have to do.

“Hurry boy! I’ve got an urgent meeting in a few minutes back at the Castle. Wouldn’t want to be late, ey?” The stranger laughed at his own, bad joke and winked down at the young boy dragging the old coat. Next to the visitor stood a tall guy, brunette, and blue-eyed who glanced down at the little boy and with his expression gave him signs that he was dirtying the garment. The youngster, quickly realizing his error took the piece of fabric carefully and carried it with godly caution to his owner’s raisin hands.

“I’m sorry sir,” he babbled.

The elderly visitor clicked his tongue and placed one arm around the boy’s tiny shoulders “It’s okay lad. This old piece of skin needs a wash already anyway.” He squeezed the boy’s shoulders in a reassuring manner and placed the garment around his own, tall shoulders.

The boy kept looking down. He felt ashamed of himself. Back to shoe polishing it is then, he said to himself.

He visitor turned to the second adult and joined hands with him. “Well, Sir Books, it was a pleasure making business with you. I’ll see you at the Royal Library then.” He smiled warmly and seemed so friendly that the young boy almost fell for his kindness. His Father quickly did though. Books beaming with joy guided the elderly man to the exit of their crowded apartment and once he shut the door, the young boy was wise enough to speak.

“He couldn’t be any more obvious than that, Father.”

The adult smiled back at his frowning kid, “Seriously. Do you still not believe him?”

“Do I have a right to speak my opinions now that I’m not a shoe polisher but a royal ‘coat-fetcher’?”

Books simply laughed at his statement. “Do as you wish Shad.”

“I don’t trust that guy. He’s just too...”

“Convincing, gentle, funny, helpful, mild. You name it.” Replied the adult as he took two glasses from a counter above a book-crowded desk. Then he poured a red liquid on the container right and milk on the left.

“... false.”

“Name it as you wish, Son, but now I’ll finally receive permit from the Royal Council to continue my investigation on the Sky People with the books from their library. I’m sure more clues can be found there.” He took a sip from his whisky, his eyes shimmering with passion on that subject.

“He hasn’t even asked them about it Father. That’s the meeting he’s going to right now.”

“True. But I’m sure good ol’ Auru is good enough to persuade those nosey, stock-up congressmen to allow me to check on their old books. Seriously, I doubt that they have even laid one eye on their pages oh so full mystery, adventure, and lore!”

The young boy sighed as he took his glass of milk, “Father, you’re letting it get to yourself again.”

Books snickered embarrassed, “I’m sorry. I can’t handle it. It’s just that I’m too excited. Finally our hard work is paying off! Our dream is coming to us!”

“...Your dream.”

“I’m sorry, my dream.” He corrected, not surprised by his child’s response. No flattery for the child huh? Boy, was sarcasm taking the better of him. He passed a slim finger across the glass’s surface and the vibration and pressure he placed unto the glass created small ripples to form on the stinking, crimson liquid’s surface and a tinkling sound reverberated from the container.

The adult stared down at the young boy who was playing tediously with the remaining milk inside his own glass. He looked back at his drink and smiled. “Now’s not the time to be worried about our conditions, how about a toast?”

“For what...?” muttered the kid, adjusting his enormous glasses.

“For us and for our future,” replied Books leaned toward his son with a ginger smile and stretched his glass toward the boy’s.

The youngster smiled shyly back at him and held out his own container, “For us.”

“And for the Sky Beings!”

"To wield your sword for the sake of protecting those you love... that is called chivalry."

-

After the events of Twilight, Link is heartbroken and uneasy. He quickly learns that returning to his humble life as a wrangler in Ordon is not what he wants, not after riding through the vast corners of Hyrule for more than a year.
Soon enough, notice is spread that Hyrule's Resistance is leaving on command of the Princess to bring order to the land on her behalf.
Traveling once again through Hylia was all that Link wanted to do. He just couldn't wait to face the risks of adventuring once more...

Pairings: hints of LinkxMidna in the first chapters, one-sided LinkxIlia, one-sided LinkxAshei, and perhaps one-sided ShadxAshei.

I like this beginning... or oneshot? *is a Shad fangirl* However, Shad and his father (though his father is deceased in the game) are noblemen. I wasn't sure how you had them pictured here... but it didn't strike me as that.

haha don't worry for this is not a one-shot. It's like some sort of prologue for the whole story which revolves around Shad, Link, Ashei, Rusl, Auru, Ilia, Colin, and Talo (and Midna and Zelda in the first chapters).

Well... I remember reading somewhere that Shad's father worked as a butler at the Castle. So... I can somehow see them as nobles but I can imagine Shad's father spending most of his riches on his investigartion and thus ending with a measly quantity of money to sustain Shad and himself (therefore, this led Shad to work outside Chubbly's store cleaning shoes to get some money ). So he starts working on restaurants in Castle Town and finally in the Castle. Though, he still wished to continue his studies on the Sky People and with help of Auru, he gained access to the library of the Royal Family, thus earning more respect and a higher rank as an investigator and scholar (seeming more like a noble then) .

That's how I see this and if you don't think the same it's okay. At least this helps in my story. ^_^

Thats nice and all, but Shad's father was NOT a butler. The game never said that (I know this because I've beated the game twice and I'm EXTREMELY obsessed with Shad, so everything about him I am very well versed on). Shad said his father served and was aquainted with the Royal Family (served does not mean butler or anything remotely close to that. Also, why would a butler/servant care about research?). Shad also said his father was an intelectual and respected man of Hyrule in his lifetime (So he definately was not a butler. This means he had an important role in Hylian society if he was respected by Hyrule as a whole). Shad's clothing is elegant and sophisticated looking compared to what most people of Hyrule wear. Shad is obviously not a poor man. He seems very well off and is always seen with books (books were a sign of great wealth in the middle ages).

I'm not knocking your story, its written very well and I liked it... but I feel the need to tell you that on the butler thing you have been misinformed. As far as serving the Royal Family goes, he may have had a position in the Castle... but it was not a servants position.

I've beaten it 4 times ^^; but it's not a competition...

Alright! Thanks for the information (especially the one of the books meaning power in the Middle Ages. That's gonna help a lot with the story!). I mean, I read on a guide (not that those are correct) that little piece of info so, I thought it was interesting to use it. I decided to at first have them being normal bourgeois with a fair amount of money and what made them reach their high position as nobles and earn their respect was for Shad's father's interest in learning and research. But hey, I'm glad you've helped me on some things I might need to still polish in the storyline but hell... it's gonna help for the development of Shad's character in future chapters. I hope I will still count with you as a reader as the story progresses. ^__^

I'll definately read. I  Shad. ^_^

Shad actually reminds me of an Englishman during the Victorian Era. Not to mention in the games he speaks using proper English dialogue (he's well educated obviously). When he's formally introduced to Link this is what he says. "Oh, hello there! You must be Link, correct? I'm Shad. Wonderful to meet you. Sorry about the ribbing I gave you the other day, old boy. This town is rather teeming with odd sorts, so I was just being careful." I just love his dialogue alot. XDDD

Since you are discussing his father (whom we don't know a whole lot about). Here is a piece of dialogue I have where Shad mentions his fathers notes on the Oocca (maybe this might help you out or give you an idea or something). "Observe this statue! It's the same as the one in the manuscripts my dear father left me. There are many similar statues around Hyrule, but this one seems to be different. Here, look at the belly... There's something written there, you see? This, too, was in my father's notes... It is called Sky Writing, I believe. "Awaken us with the word that breaks the seal." ... Yes, indeed, that is what it says." I don't know how, but somehow Shad's father is able to read the Oocca language, I assume he taught Shad how to read it as well, since he was able to recite that incantation to unknowingly bring power back to the Dominion Rod.

You got a point there and there's lots of information and bits and pieces of info that I missed. Thanks for pointing out his way of talking: ellegant and old-english-esque. That'll help a bunch...

Oh, hey, I'll be sending a note to your club. I'm definitely joining! And... if it's not much bother, could you post my story (at least this chapter) there please?

Sure. I'll be glad to add you as a member. It would be good if this fanfiction was about Shad's life, that would be really cool. I don't know if he has any other family... he only mentioned his father (who is deceased) in the game. He may have other family (its not impossible), but I tend to believe he is the only one left of his immediate family (the last to carry on his fathers name, if you will). So... any love intrests for Shad? I like to pair him with men and women. XD

Well, this fic is actually about all the members of The Resistance (Shad included of course ;)) and of course as their adventures go on, a few romance tends to grow ;) First, there's Link and Ilia (who tags along in their adventures) and well... I decided to pair up Shad with Ashei. I know it sounds strange but I found Shad could have a tinge of interest in her, though, of course his feelings are unrequited for Ashei tends to develop some feelings for Link. @_@ gah, I'm confusing myself lol

I kinda had it the other way around. I thought Ashei might like Shad, but Shad is pretty much oblivious that she likes him. In the game where where you play as wolf Link and you sneak over the bar you can eavesdrop on Ashei, Shad, and Auru... Shad is worried about "fisticuffs" with Link and Ashei comforts Shad by telling him that won't happen while she's around. I'm not really a fan of Ashei, but I do think she is protective of Shad and I do like the pairing. At the end of the game he and Ashei are seen together in the Sacred Grove where he is obviously talking her head off and Ashei repeatedly nods at him. XDDD It just seems like Shad is to concerned with his research that he probably doesn't even think of love. But I'm sure if he met the right person (one who was intrested in his work also) something might come of it. But in the game, Ashei just seems to not like Link at all... sure she thinks he's a good guy, but she see's him as a show off and he annoys her. Ashei is a very manly woman, she feels the need to be the lead and protect someone (this someone is obviously not Link)... I think this might be why she would gravitate towards Shad, because she can look out for him and I think she likes that.
